This course is designed to prepare students for the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) certification exam. The course covers all the topics that are necessary to become a proficient Power BI data analyst, including data modeling, visualization, report creation, and dashboard design.

The course begins with an introduction to Power BI and its various components. Students will learn about data sources, data modeling, and creating visuals in Power BI. The course also covers the process of creating reports, including adding visuals and formatting options.

In addition to report creation, the course will cover advanced visualization techniques, including drill-throughs, bookmarks, and custom visuals. Students will also learn how to design dashboards and create KPIs using Power BI.

Throughout the course, students will have access to hands-on labs and practical exercises to reinforce their learning. The labs will be based on real-world scenarios, allowing students to apply their knowledge to actual data analysis situations.

Domain 1 Prepare the data (27.5%)

  • Identify and connect to data sources or a shared semantic model; choose between DirectLake, DirectQuery, and Import
  • Change data source settings (credentials, privacy levels) and create/modify parameters
  • Profile data (statistics, column properties) and resolve inconsistencies, nulls, and import errors
  • Select appropriate column data types; create and transform columns; group and aggregate rows
  • Pivot/unpivot/transpose data; convert semi-structured data to a table; create fact and dimension tables
  • Identify/create appropriate keys for relationships; merge and append queries; configure data loading

Domain 2 Model the data (27.5%)

  • Configure table and column properties; implement role-playing dimensions
  • Define relationship cardinality and cross-filter direction; create a common date table
  • Identify use cases for calculated columns and calculated tables
  • Create DAX measures: single aggregations, CALCULATE, time intelligence, statistical functions, semi-additive measures
  • Create quick measures, calculation groups, calculated tables/columns
  • Optimize model performance (remove unnecessary rows/columns, use Performance Analyzer and DAX query view, reduce granularity)

Domain 3 Visualize and analyze the data (27.5%)

  • Select and format appropriate visuals; apply themes, conditional formatting, slicing/filtering; create visual calculations with DAX
  • Use Copilot to create/suggest report pages and narrative visuals; choose when to use a paginated report
  • Enhance reports for usability: bookmarks, custom tooltips, visual interactions, navigation, drillthrough, sync slicers
  • Design reports for mobile and accessibility; configure export settings and automatic page refresh
  • Identify patterns and trends using the Analyze feature, grouping/binning/clustering, AI visuals, forecasting and reference lines
  • Detect outliers/anomalies; use Copilot to summarize the underlying semantic model

Domain 4 Manage and secure Power BI (17.5%)

  • Create and configure workspaces; publish, import, or update items; create dashboards and apps
  • Choose a distribution method; configure subscriptions and data alerts; promote or certify content
  • Identify when a gateway is required; configure semantic model scheduled refresh
  • Assign workspace roles and configure item-level access and access to semantic models
  • Implement row-level security roles and configure RLS group membership
  • Apply sensitivity labels
