What's This Course About

Budgeting for SMEs equips business owners, managers and finance staff with the practical skills to plan, prepare, control and review budgets that keep a small or medium-sized enterprise financially healthy. A well-built budget turns business goals into numbers, highlights cash pressures before they become a crisis and gives managers a clear benchmark for decisions. The course is tailored to the realities SMEs face, such as limited resources, seasonal cash flow and fast-changing conditions, and requires no advanced finance background.

You will start with an introduction to financial budgeting, exploring the purpose of budgets, the main budget types and how budgeting links to strategy. Next you will learn financial forecasting, using historical data, trends and assumptions to project sales, costs and cash flow. You will then work through budget preparation, building sales, operating, capital and cash budgets step by step in a spreadsheet, followed by developing a budget control plan that assigns responsibility and sets review points.

The later topics cover budget analysis, including variance analysis and identifying the causes of over- and under-spending, budget approval, presenting and justifying budgets to owners, boards and lenders, and financial compliance, ensuring budgets and spending align with internal controls and regulatory requirements. Practical exercises use realistic SME scenarios throughout. By the end, you will be able to prepare a sound budget, monitor performance against it and use budget insights to make better financial decisions for your business.
