What's This Course About

Basic Accounting for Non-Finance Managers gives managers and professionals without a finance background a clear, practical understanding of how accounting works and how to use financial information to make better decisions. You do not need to become an accountant to read a profit and loss statement, understand your department's costs or have confident conversations with your finance team. The course is designed for managers, team leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals who need to manage budgets or interpret financial reports.

You will start with the basics of financial accounting: the accounting equation, double-entry bookkeeping, the accounting cycle, and how transactions flow into the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement. You will learn how to read these statements and what key figures and ratios tell you about performance and financial health. Next you will cover the basics of managerial accounting, including cost behaviour, fixed and variable costs, break-even analysis, budgeting and how cost information supports pricing and operational decisions.

The final topic introduces common accounting issues and income taxes, such as revenue recognition, depreciation, accruals and how business income tax works in practice. Throughout the course you will work through simple examples and case studies drawn from real business situations. By the end, you will be able to understand and interpret financial statements, use accounting information to plan and control your area of responsibility, and communicate more effectively with finance professionals.
